Me MySpace and I or Food Combining and Digestion

Me, MySpace, and I: Parenting the Net Generation

Author: Larry D Rosen

Young people spend hours online each day online, and their abilities to multitask and communicate are often misunderstood by older generations. Dr. Larry Rosen offers a full overview of the various issues young people may experience in their online worlds (cyberbullying, addiction, sexuality, virtual friendships, and more) while at the same time challenging commonly held beliefs that these communities are damaging. Instead of using scare tactics, the book shows parents how to be proactive and anticipate potential problems. With his extensive background in both child development and the impact of technology, Dr. Rosen uses down-to-earth explanations of sound psychological theory, incorporates groundbreaking research, and shows parents and educators how social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook can improve adolescent socialization skills.

Linda Beck - Library Journal

Call them Millennials, Gen Yers, or MySpacers-but pay attention! Millennials (those born after 1979) are different from their predecessors; not only do they use their time differently, but they seek to create content, are bored if not multitasking, are far from private, and are always online. Rosen (psychology, California State Univ.; coauthor, TechnoStress: Coping with Technology @ Work @ Home @ Play) offers a well-documented comparison between and among baby boomers (b. 1946-64), Gen Xers (b. 1965-79), and Millennials-their values, career goals, loyalties, workplace styles, and more. When not on social-networking sites like MySpace or Facebook, Millennials are IM'ing, conducting research online, visiting the virtual world Second Life, or playing video games-sometimes all at the same time. Interestingly, Millennials also value their parents' opinions and are career- and college-focused, emotionally open, and very social. Rosen advises parents to be proactive and to learn how to avoid problems before they start-e.g., by placing the family computer in a common area of the home, setting limits, using MySpace themselves, and talking with and listening to their kids even more. Highly recommended.

Dr Peter Scardinos Prostate Book or Your Drug May Be Your Problem

Dr. Peter Scardino's Prostate Book: The Complete Guide to Overcoming Prostate Cancer, Prostatitis, and BPH

Author: Peter T Scardino

Although most men couldn't tell you what the prostate does, an overwhelming majority will be affected by prostate problems at some time in their lives. In his discussion of prostatitis and prostate enlargement (BPH), as well as prostate cancer, Dr. Peter Scardino carefully and clearly explains what can go wrong, how to prevent prostate trouble, and what to do if problems develop. Dr. Scardino has treated thousands of patients at one of the world's best research hospitals. He developed the innovative erectile-nervegrafting procedure that makes it possible for men with serious cancer to recover sexual function and mathematical tools (nomograms) patients and physicians can use to improve medical decision-making. Now men everywhere can access his years of expertise. Dr. Peter Scardino's Prostate Book will help them and their loved ones to:

- understand and interpret complicated test results
- develop a customized action plan that suits individual needs
- get the best care and ensure the best possible recovery from treatment
- learn state-of-the-art strategies to prevent prostate diseases

This book covers everything a man needs to know about his prostate health-from how aging affects sexual intimacy to asking the right questions to choosing among available therapeutic options. Dr. Scardino discusses cutting-edge strategies, using the latest research findings to explore the many factors that affect patients, including possible complications and ways to minimize them.

One in six men in the United States will be diagnosed with cancer, and nearly half the adult male population will be affected by prostatitis. Dr. Peter Scardino's ProstateBook provides the hard facts and a compassionate voice to guide every man to health and healing. Illustrated throughout with line art by Frank Forney.

Publishers Weekly

Many men have a dreaded fear of prostate problems that prevents them from seeking help. In response to that approach, Scardino, a practicing urologist at Manhattan's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, quotes Joe Torre regarding his own experience with prostate cancer: "When you get the information, the fear just sort of melts away." This book should diminish many fears with its straightforward, three-part presentation. Part One introduces the normal prostate and its function. Part Two presents common prostate problems that more than half of all men will face: prostatitis and an enlarged prostate. Part Three, the most comprehensive section, presents all that's presently known about prostate cancer (prostate tumors account for one-third of all internal cancers diagnosed in men). In simple, concise prose, Scardino discusses risk factors, prevention and detection. Acknowledging the lack of a standardized treatment, Scardino presents available options and their resultant statistics. Important side effects that many men are curious about but are afraid to bring up with doctors are discussed in detail. Perhaps the book's most valuable parts lie at the beginning of every chapter, where Scardino gives a synopsis of what readers will learn in that section. This is one of the most comprehensive, accessible books on prostate cancer published to date. B&w illus. Agent, Peter Lampack. (Apr.) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Strength Training for Young Athletes

Author: William J Kraemer

Young superstar athletes have dispelled long-standing misconceptions that strength development should start in the late teens. But much discussion has continued regarding what type of training is most beneficial.

Strength Training for Young Athletes provides all the answers as the authoritative guide to strength development for 7- to 18-year-old athletes. World-renowned strength and conditioning experts William Kraemer and Steven Fleck present the latest facts on the effects of strength training on growth, development, and performance. Learn how to individualize the age-appropriate sample training programs provided, based on the athlete's physical, psychological, and emotional maturity as well as the demands of the sport. Such carefully designed programs not only improve athletic performance and prepare young athletes for higher competitive levels, but they also help to decrease the incidence of injury along the way.

Recent scientific studies have demonstrated that youngsters do indeed increase their strength with resistance training and that this can be done safely and effectively with a properly designed and supervised program of training....What exercises, how much weight, and with what equipment? This book answers all these questions and more. This is a practical, clearly written manual which describes specifically how to institute and supervise a strength training program for young athletes. Forever Cool or The Ultimate Fit or Fat

Forever Cool: How to Achieve Ageless, Youthful, and Modern Personal Style

Author: Sherrie Mathieson

Each year, 75 million baby boomers spend $100 billion on clothes—but you’d never know it to look at them. Alarmed by the fashion faux pas of her fellow fifty-plus peers, style consultant Sherrie Mathieson set out to help them update their personal style yet remain age-appropriate. While her theory is to skip formulas and mix it up, she counsels her boomer brethren to avoid trying too hard (Ladies, what’s worn in Vegas, stays in Vegas; guys, flowered shirts are so Beach Boys).

She presents stylish, contemporary twists to classic looks (a simple, sleekly cut black suit is punched up with stacked silver jewelry; a graphic skirt adds panache to a solid-color sweater set; a pair of men’s khakis is driven out of dullsville with a black linen shirt).

Each page pictures an unfortunate “never cool” ensemble and beside it a “forever cool” rendition. Whether her stuck-in-a-fashion-rut real-life people are sporting sad accessories, underage looks, problem prints, or predictable pieces, Mathieson takes on all of them with kindhearted candor and breathes new life into their attire.

From work attire to special-occasion outfits for evening, the beach, the gym—even the ski slopes!—Sherrie Mathieson has fresh-looking fashion fixes for any boomer who is ready to ramp up his or her clothes savvy.

The Ultimate Fit or Fat

Author: Covert Bailey

With more than three million copies of previous editions in print, this classic exercise manual has shown Americans from all walks of life the route from fatness to fitness. Now Covert Bailey has totally rewritten and revised Fit or Fat for the first time since the book's original publication in the mid-1970s. His dramatically new approach to fitness incorporates the most recent scientific findings. Weighlifting, whose fat-burning potential is only now becoming fully understood, plays a large role in Bailey's new program, which stresses what he calls "the four food groups" of exercise: aerobics, cross-training, wind sprints, and weightlifting. He also stresses the importance of intense exercise, showing readers how to build intensity into their daily programs safely and effectively. Covert Bailey's Ultimate Fit or Fat will not only be of interest to a new health-conscious generation but will be eagerly sought out by the millions of readers who have come to rely on the Bailey approach to keep their bodies in peak condition.

Publishers Weekly

Sixty-seven-year-old fitness instructor Bailey takes a systematic, straightforward approach to lifetime physical fitness in his final contribution to the successful two-decade Fit or Fat series. Here he begins with the basic premise that the tendency to get fat has little to do with the amount or quality of food eaten and as proof points to the ineffectual long-term results of dieting. Asserting that exercise is the ultimate control of metabolism (something diet is unable to change), Bailey claims it is the amount of fat-burning muscle that determines one's ability to lose fat (though he sympathetically notes women's lesser ability to control fat due to hormones, lower muscle mass and childbirth). Instructions for simple at-home tests allow the reader to accurately measure their own body fat percentage, lean body mass, ideal weight, ideal exercise heart rate and exercise pace, giving a starting point for any future progress. Likening his weekly exercise program to the four food groups, with three to four recommended servings of aerobics, two to three servings each of cross-training and weight lifting and one to two servings of wind sprints, Bailey offers a varied menu of exercises in each category (including a special no-barbells home weight lifting chapter for the gym-phobic), stressing the pros and cons of each and warning that exercise is not effective when the body has no time to recuperate. Bailey, in no-nonsense prose, will motivate the reader with his contagiously positive outlook and personal anecdotes. (Jan.) Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.

"'In my little way I'm going to rattle the world,' proclaims Covert Bailey, who already rattled the world when he changed the way America looked at weight loss and exercise with his original Fit or Fat in the mid-1970s. Now he's back with a new spin on the Fit or Fat principles. This small book (180 pages, about 5 by 8 inches) teaches you how to get fit faster and raise your metabolism. To improve your fitness level most quickly, Bailey recommends his "Four Food Groups of Good Exercise": aerobic exercise, cross training (varying your exercise choices), wind sprints (exercising, but my body is changing into a better butter-burning machine," he says. "The purpose of my exercise is to change my chemistry." As we expect from Covert, his style is clever and feisty--the book is fun to read, and the information goes down easily. He offers some witty, memorable principles, such as "The more muscle an exercise uses, the less long you gotta do it!", "If you're fit, exercise long; if you're fat, go short but often," and this motto for the older exerciser: "When you are over the hill--you pick up speed!" He includes a body-fat test and a find-your-pace fitness test." --Joan Price

Eating for Acid Reflux: A Handbook and Cookbook for Those with Heartburn

Author: Jill Sklar

Gastroesophageal reflux disease—a digestive condition characterized by a surplus of gastric acid that backs up into the esophagus and damages fragile tissues—causes burning pain, nausea, and vomiting for millions of people each day. Now, in Eating for Acid Reflux, authors and fellow acid reflux sufferers Jill Sklar and Annabel Cohen offer an invaluable resource for all those seeking relief from acid reflux symptoms. Split into two user-friendly sections, Eating for Acid Reflux first provides essential information on the nature of the condition, mainstream and alternative therapies, essential lifestyle modifications, personal stories from others with the condition, and much more. The next section offers over 100 healthy, tasty, low-fat, low-acid recipes, ranging from American culinary favorites to exotic Thai, Mexican, and Italian dishes, and suggests simple substitutes for seemingly forbidden foods such as desserts and salad dressing. Complete with an extensive resource section, Eating for Acid Reflux is perfect for everyone newly diagnosed with acid reflux as well as for those who have struggled with the condition for years and are seeking new tips and diet ideas.

Library Journal

Many people are surprised to discover that gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is more than just a little heartburn. It is often life altering and, if it advances to Barrett's esophagus or esophageal cancer, can even be life threatening. This book opens with a useful, accessibly written handbook describing the disease and its complications, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as advice regarding helpful lifestyle changes. The coverage is surprisingly thorough considering that this part of the book is a mere 97 pages. The second half is a cookbook full of low-fat, low-acid, yet delicious-sounding recipes that offer great alternatives to the bland diet GERD patients often experience. Many of the recipes are remakes of common dishes that are usually off limits because of taboo ingredients. A few recipes do seem a little questionable, e.g., a potato recipe featuring horseradish, a common reflux trigger. Overall, however, this is a nice addition to most collections.-KellyJo Houtz Griffin, Eatonville, WA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Road Map to Holland or Quick Easy Diabetic Recipes for One

Road Map to Holland: How I Found My Way Through My Son's First Two Years With Down Syndrome

Author: Jennifer Graf Groneberg

An exceptional memoir that provides emotional insight and practical advice.

It's like planning a trip to Italy, only to get off the plane and discover you're actually in Holland. You need a new road map, and fast...

When Jennifer Groneberg and her husband learned they'd be having twin boys, their main concern was whether they'd need an addition on their house. Then, five days after Avery and Bennett were born, Avery was diagnosed with Down syndrome.

Here, Jennifer shares the story of what followed. She dealt with doctors-some who helped, and some who were disrespectful or even dangerous. She saw some relationships in her life grow stronger, while severing ties with people who proved unsupportive. And she continues to struggle to find balance in the hardships and joys of raising a child with special needs. This book is a resource, a companion for parents, and above all, a story of the love between a mother and her son-as she learns that Avery is exactly the child she never knew she wanted.

Publishers Weekly

Montana wife and mother Groneberg traces in her tenderly moving account the life-changing realization after the premature birth of her twin boys that one of them, Avery, has Down syndrome. Utterly unprepared for the emergency C-section of the seven-week-early preemies, Groneberg and her writer husband, Tom, the parents of a four-year-old, are devastated by the news about Avery, and they must gradually alter their easygoing future plans about raising their kids. They reject the notion of adoption, suggested by a well-intentioned nurse at the hospital where the babies are ensconced in the neonatal intensive-care unit, and embark on an exhaustively trying, ultimately enlightening journey to care for the needy babies, especially Avery, and educate themselves about his condition. Rising from the shame of feeling that their family is "broken," and letting slide hurtful comments by a grocery-store clerk or neighbor, Groneberg devoured books and information from the Internet, and began to foster their son's development by seeking out physical therapists and specialists. Small gains in Avery's motor skills were causes for celebration, and the beginning of speech the greatest gift the parents could ask for. Groneberg affectingly delineates these gradual, hard-won stages during Avery's first year toward love and acceptance. (Apr.)

Inspired by "Welcome to Holland," Emily Perl Kingsley's 1987 essay about her experiences raising a special-needs child, Groneberg here shares her own story, which begins with her unexpected early delivery of twin boys, Avery and Bennett; it continues with Avery's being diagnosed with Down syndrome five days later and follows her from there. As she narrates her disorienting experience ("It's like planning a trip to Italy, only to get off the plane and discover you're actually in Holland. You need a new road map, and fast..."), we are drawn in by her candid revelations about the emotions and other discoveries she encounters along the way. Groneberg explores the pain of sharing the news with friends and family-not everyone is able to look past the diagnosis and see the wonder of Avery. She includes an extensive bibliography, a glossary of terms, and resources for parents who might find themselves in a similar situation. A beautiful book full of insight into life with Down syndrome, this recounts a trip that did not go according to plan but turned out to be perfect after all. Highly recommended.

Driven to Distraction or Lunch Lessons

Driven to Distraction: Recognizing and Coping with Attention Deficit Disorder from Childhood Through Adulthood

Author: Edward M Hallowell

THE NATIONAL AUDIO BESTSELLER

Procrastination. Disorganization. Distractibility. Millions of adults have long considered these the hallmarks of a lack of self-discipline. But for many, these and other problems in school, at work and in social relationships are actually symptoms of an inborn neurological problem: ADD, or Attention Deficit Disorder.

Through vivid stories of the experiences of their patients -- both adults and children -- Dr. Edward R. Hallowell and Dr. John J. Ratey show the varied forms ADD takes -- from the hyperactive search for high stimulation to the floating inattention of daydreaming -- and the transforming impact of precise diagnosis and treatment.

Driven to Distraction is a must listen for everyone intrigued by the workings of the human mind.

Library Journal

Hallowell and Ratey offer a fine addition to literature on ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). The authors employ a broad, general definition of ADD (``high-energy, action-oriented, bottom-line, gotta-run-type people'') and continually emphasize the special, positive qualities of people with ADD. They describe how ADD affects adults--many Americans mistakenly think of it as a childhood curse--and explain how the American temperament helps create ADD-like symptoms. Best of all are the stories and case studies of myriad folks who have dealt successfully with their diagnosis. A state-by-state list of support groups are included in this excellent approach to an intriguing subject.-- Linda Beck, Indian Valley P.L., Telford, Pa.

Lunch Lessons: Changing the Way We Feed Our Children

Author: Ann Cooper

Remember how simple school lunches used to be? You'd have something from every major food group, run around the playground for a while, and you looked and felt fine. But today it's not so simple. Schools are actually feeding the American crisis of childhood obesity and malnutrition. Most cafeterias serve a veritable buffet of processed, fried, and sugary foods, and although many schools have attempted to improve, they are still not measuring up: 78 percent of the school lunch programs in America do not meet the USDA's nutritional guidelines.

Chef Ann Cooper has emerged as one of the nation's most influential and most respected advocates for changing how our kids eat. In fact, she is something of a renegade lunch lady, minus the hairnet and scooper of mashed potatoes. Ann has worked to transform cafeterias into culinary classrooms. In Lunch Lessons, she and Lisa Holmes spell out how parents and school employees can help instill healthy habits in children.

They explain the basics of good childhood nutrition and suggest dozens of tasty, home-tested recipes for breakfast, lunch, and snacks. The pages are also packed with recommendations on how to eliminate potential hazards from the home, bring gardening and composting into daily life, and how to support businesses that provide local, organic food.

Yet learning about nutrition and changing the way you run your home will not cure the plague of obesity and poor health for this generation of children. Only parental activism can spark widespread change. With inspirational examples and analysis, Lunch Lessons is more than just a recipe book—it gives readers the tools to transform the waychildren everywhere interact with food.

Library Journal

Trained chefs Cooper (Bitter Harvest) and Holmes (In Mother's Kitchen) explain the vital role of good nutrition in children's well-being in this informative and alarming examination of the unhealthy offerings of most school lunch programs. As school cafeterias have increasingly been inundated with corporate-sponsored fast food, childhood obesity rates have soared, and there have been greater behavioral problems in the classroom. Cooper and Holmes provide a clear guide for understanding children's nutritional needs and convincingly argue for the benefits of meals containing locally grown organic whole foods in reasonable, kid-sized portions. They supply numerous encouraging examples of forward-thinking schools that have successfully transformed their lunchroom menus and developed hands-on programs to educate children about balanced nutrition, healthy eating habits, and sustainable farming. Like Eric Schlosser's more broadly focused Fast Food Nation, this book, which includes two chapters of nutritious recipes and a resource guide, delivers a much-needed wake-up call regarding America's poor eating habits. Especially useful for parents, teachers, or school administrators working to improve childhood nutrition; highly recommended for most public libraries.-Ingrid Levin, Florida Atlantic Univ. The key to this revolutionary diet is the idea of nutrient density, as expressed by the simple formula, Health = Nutrients/Calories. When the ratio of nutrients to calories is high, fat melts away and health is restored. Losing 20 pounds in two to three weeks is just the beginning. The more high-nutrient food Dr. Fuhrman's patients consume, the more they are satisfied with fewer calories, and the less they crave fat and high-calorie foods. Designed for people who must lose 50 pounds or more in a hurry, Eat to Live works for every dieter, even those who want to lose as little as 10 pounds quickly. Ancient Secret of the Fountain of Youth

Author: Peter Kelder

Finally, the exciting and long-awaited sequel to one of the biggest health and healing bestsellers of all time has arrived.

When Peter Kelder's Ancient Secret of the Fountain of Youth was released by Harbor Press in 1985, it immediately touched off an incredible sales phenomenon rivaled only by The Celestine Prophecy and Conversations with God.  In this book, readers were introduced to the Tibetan Rites of Rejuvenation, a series of exercises developed over centuries in the monasteries of Tibet and credited by thousands for everything from increased energy to better memory, weight loss, and just looking and feeling younger.

Almost as quickly as the books filtered across the globe, letters began to pour in to Harbor Press requesting more information on these mysterious rites. Now, more than ten years and two million books later, comes a comprehensive companion volume that addresses the unanswered questions of so many readers.

Picking up where Kelder's book left off, Ancient Secret of the Fountain of Youth, Book 2 provides the complete Fountain of Youth health program, with detailed information on a variety of topics discussed only fleetingly in the original bestseller: the history and origins of the Five Rites, valuable insights about how the Rites work, diet suggestions, and easy-to-follow exercises. Illustrated with fifty black-and-white photographs, this guide will help turn back the hands of time, invigorating and energizing readers' lives as never before.

Being with Dying or Yoga for Arthritis

Being with Dying: Cultivating Compassion and Fearlessness in the Presence of Death

Author: Joan Halifax

In this long-awaited book of inspiring and practical teachings, Buddhist teacher Joan Halifax offeres the fruits of her many years of work with dying people. Inspired by traditional Buddhist teachings, her work is a source of wisdom for all those who are charged with a dying person's care, facing their own death, or wishing to explore and contemplate the transformative power of the dying process.

Halifax offers lessons from dying people and caregivers, as well as guided meditations to help readers contemplate death without fear, develop a commitment to helping others, and transform suffering and resistance into courage. She says, "Why wait until we are actualy dying to explore what it may mean to die with awareness?"

A world-renowned pioneer in care of the dying, Joan Halifax founded the Project on Being with Dying, which helps dying people to face death with courage and trains professional and family caregivers in compassionate and ethical end-of-life care.

Publishers Weekly

In this moving meditation on palliative care, Halifax tells a story about a dying Zen teacher who confesses to his students: "Maybe I will die in fear or pain. Remember there is no right way." This sentiment forms the core of a book that provides practical and philosophical guidance to caregivers. Drawing on her 30 years of experience in the "contemplative care of the dying," Halifax honestly enumerates the challenges of being with the dying while exalting it as "a school for unlearning the patterns of resistance... [it] enjoins us to be still, let go, listen, and be open to the unknown." According to Halifax, "bearing witness to dying" can teach innumerable lessons to the living—assuming "we give up our tight control strategies, our ideas of what it means to die well." Halifax is a Zen priest, and while many of her teachings derive from Buddhism, her supremely readable book will attract readers of all faiths who will appreciate her clarity and compassion and the poignancy of these stories of ordinary people facing their final hours with quiet courage. Yoga for Arthritis: The Complete Guide

Author: Loren Fishman

A comprehensive, user-friendly medical yoga program designed for management and prevention of arthritis, with over 400 illustrations.

Arthritis restricts movement; yoga increases range of motion: these two were made for each other. Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in this country, limiting everyday activities for more than seven million Americans. Drugs, surgeries, and steroids can alleviate some of the discomforts, but study after study has shown that exercise is most beneficial to most forms of arthritis, specifically low-impact, flexibility-enhancing exercises—hence, yoga. In this comprehensive and thoroughly illustrated guide, Loren Fishman and Ellen Saltonstall, who between them have seven decades of clinical experience, help readers understand arthritis and give a spectrum of exercises for beginners and experts. Broken down into chapters focusing on each major joint, there are 100 classical yoga poses and numerous imaginative and physiologically sound adapted poses, all with step-by-step instructions and easy-to-follow photo demonstrations. The authors welcome readers into the philosophy and principles of yoga and show how to use yoga to find lasting relief from arthritis. Over 400 illustrations.

Elaine M. Lasda Bergman <P>Copyright &copy; Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. - School Library Journal

Fishman (medicine, Columbia Univ.) and yoga instructor/massage therapist Saltonstall combine their respective expertise to good effect in this useful, instructive book providing essential information about the practice of yoga and how yoga's concepts relate to the condition of arthritis. In this way, they arm arthritis sufferers with the knowledge necessary to begin the proper practice of yoga. The authors start with an easy-to-understand explanation of the affected anatomy and a brief history of yogic philosophy. They then clearly describe various asanas, or poses, meant to enhance flexibility and range of motion. After some general-purpose "All-Star" poses, remaining poses are organized anatomically (e.g., hands and wrists, knees, spine), with some repeated in other chapters. Modifications appear for various levels of ability, and photographs and illustrations clearly depict proper alignment. The physiological details and many features of the pose instructions (e.g., purpose, contraindications) make this one of the more thorough and well-written yoga guides currently in print. Highly recommended for public and academic/medical libraries.

The original edition of 1970's now-classic Our Bodies, Ourselves has sold more than three million copies, and the revised and expanded edition will likely prove equally popular among women of all ages. According to the authors, some of them among the original contributors, knowledge is power, but women will make little change in the medical and health-care industries unless they join forces with other women at home and around the world. Like its predecessor, this volume is wide in scope (but lacking in depth), and has a profoundly feminist perspective as it emphasizes sexual health, reproductive rights, community-based organization and the political, economic and social conditions that limit women's access to quality health care. Much of the new information details recent health research on women's needs and inequities in medical care for men and women, and reflects the experiences of different ethnicities, sexual preferences and economic backgrounds. Women are the primary consumers of health care in the U.S., but, the authors say, they are grossly underserved. In addition, the medical community has viewed many life-stage conditions-pregnancy, premenstrual syndrome, menopause-as illnesses rather than natural processes that require teams of supportive practitioners. The book's rousing political orientation may motivate readers to access the numerous resources listed or the companion OBOS Web site. More than a book, OBOS is a health movement and deserves a place on every woman's bookshelf. (May) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Journal of the American Medical Association

"A mother lode of information and resources for the client/consumer and the physician."

Library Journal

First published in 1970, this classic has been completely overhauled but maintains its aim to empower women by addressing a wide range of health issues in a practical manner. Its strength lies not only in the huge amount of information provided but also in the methodology. Topics range from diet and exercise to relationships, motherhood, sexuality, and physical and mental illnesses; coverage of each is exceedingly readable, strikingly comprehensive, and thoroughly documented. Upwards of 400 women-and a number of men-impart their personal stories in italicized passages throughout. Readers will note the contemporary design and updated photographs, as well as a companion web site (www.ourbodiesourselves.org) with additional and updated data. Somewhat more psychosocial in approach than The New Harvard Guide to Women's Health (2004), this remarkable and necessary resource is recommended for all libraries and for individual purchase.-Linda M.G. 36 Hour Day or Diabetes Cookbook for Dummies

36-Hour Day: A Family Guide to Caring for Persons with Alzheimer Disease, Related Dementing Illnesses, and Memory Loss in Later Life

Author: Nancy L Mac

"I welcome with enthusiasm the third edition of this book for families and friends of patients with dementing illnesses. It has served well in its prior appearances and should accomplish even more with this edition." -- Paul R. McHugh, M.D., in the foreword

Through two editions, this best-selling book has remained the "bible" for families who are giving care to people with Alzheimer disease. The 36-Hour Day has offered comfort and support to millions of people in North America and, in translations and adapted editions, throughout the rest of the world. For this third edition, the authors have retained the structure, scope, and purpose of the original book, while thoroughly updating chapters to reflect the latest medical research and the current delivery of care.

Topics that have been added or extensively revised include: Updated terminology and statistics • New material on the evaluation of persons with dementia • Updated changes in laws on driving • A new section on hospice care • New information on assisted living facilities and financing care • Information on other types of dementia • The latest findings on eating and nutrition • New medical research in areas such as drugs, genetics, and diagnostic tests. The revised appendices include: New bibliographic references • websites • Updated addresses of associations and state offices.

Praise for previous editions:

"The best guide of its kind." -- Chicago Sun Times

"An excellent book for families who are caring for persons with dementia... A book that physicians can confidently recommend to the families of their patients." -- Journal of the American MedicalAssociation

"Excellent guidance and clear information of a kind that the family needs... The authors offer the realistic advice that sometimes it is better to concede the patient's frailties than to try to do something about them, and that a compassionate sense of humor often helps." -- New York Times

"An excellent, practical manual for families and professionals involved in the care of persons with progressive illnesses... The book is specific and thought-provoking, and it will be helpful to anyone even remotely involved with an 'impaired' person... Highly recommended, especially for public and nursing libraries." -- Library Journal

" The 36-Hour Day has served its readers well. The revised edition should be even more useful both to family caregivers and professional health care providers." -- HMO Practice

"The reader who is familiar with the first edition will recognize the strengths that continue in the revised edition -- numerous case examples, practical advice, thoroughness of coverage, and communication of caring and humane attitudes while presenting information that may be sensitive and upsetting to families." -- Clinical Gerontologist

New York Times

Excellent guidance and clear information.

American Geriatrics Society - William Reichel

A wealth of knowledge...the best available guide on the subject.

Journal of the American Medical Association - Albert A. Fisk

This is a book that physicians can confidently recomment to the families of their patients. It is also a book that physicians themselves can read to obtain practical advice that they can pass on to families.

This is a guidebook for everyone who deals with demented patients. The purpose is to enlighten the families of Alzheimer's patients as well as patients with other types of dementias, make them understand the patient and disease better, ease and improve their caregiving, inform them about expected consequences of the disease and suggest ways to manage the difficulties. Audiences are family members and caregivers of demented patients and anyone who is in close contact with those patients. The book can also be helpful for primary care doctors, psychiatrists, psychiatry residents, nurses, social workers, and any clinician. The text covers basic information about dementia, particularly Alzheimer's type, most common problems related to those conditions, general principles and guidelines of caregiving, and new information on the financing and delivery of care. Additional information is provided about dementia research. The first two appendixes are designed to inform the reader about recent books, videos, web sides, addresses, and telephone numbers of U.S. and international organizations. The third appendix lists state offices of aging and nursing homes. The fourth appendix includes nursing home residents' rights. The language is very easy to read, and enables everyone to understand the information. There are no tables or illustrations. This is a very useful guide about dementia, its related difficulties and illnesses, available services for demented patients, and anticipated consequences of this disease. It is highly recommended to those who have family members with dementia or who are in close contact with those people.

It has been estimated that five percent of older people suffer from severe intellectual impairment. So these two eloquent and readable guides will be much in demand as the number of families facing the challenge of caring for a relative with some form of dementing illness continues to grow. First published in 1981, The 36-Hour Day follows the format of the previous two editions but has been thoroughly updated to incorporate new information on the latest research, several drugs that hold promise, and genetic aspects of Alzheimer's. The heart of the guide remains unchanged, focusing on helping families cope with this progressive and irreversible disease. Besides tips on how to care for the demented during the various stages of the disease (for example, place a picture of a toilet on the bathroom door), the text discusses the different kinds of help available and how to seek it. Financial and legal issues are well covered, while sections on nursing homes and other alternative living arrangements provide advice and practical suggestions. Appendixes list recent books, videos, web sites, and U.S. and international organizations. The thrust of GentlecareR is a well-argued plea for a radical change in the way we care for Alzheimer's patients. In outlining her program, Jones states that this rethinking involves people, physical space, and individualized programs. Everyone in the physical plant, from maintenance worker to director, belongs to the care-giving team, as do family members and volunteers. Only when impaired persons can no longer perform for themselves a task like feeding themselves or dressing should it be done for them. Care should concentrate on what can be done, not what cannot. Because her emphasis is on the need for a comprehensive program of care and concentrates more on the institutional setting, Jones does not provide as many practical suggestions or the depth of advice for home care that Mace and Rabins do. Rather, her book describes how facilities can be designed and staffs trained to optimize the quality of life for patients. Both titles are highly recommended: Rabins and Mace for the practical help and advice, Jones for her eloquent presentation of a comprehensive program that treats patients with dignity.--Jodith Janes, Cleveland Clinic Fdn.
